CGTN Exclusive: Chinese printing company in UK Christmas card case fights back accusation

A Chinese printing company which has been suspected of using forced foreign labor in prison is fighting back the accusations as complete fabrication. Zhejiang Yunguang Printing Company has been in the headlines, after a British girl was reported to have found a note in a Christmas card, alleging forced labor by foreign inmates in a Chinese prison. The vendor of the card, British supermarket giant Tesco, has suspended ties with the Chinese supplier. CGTN's Lin Nan spoke to the Chinese firm's executive in an exclusive interview.

In an article in the Sunday Times, former British journalist Peter Humprey said a schoolgirl opened a card last week which contained a message from somebody claiming to be an inmate at Shanghai Qingpu Prison. The message also asked her to contact him. Humphrey has also worked as a corporate fraud investigator. He and his wife both spent time in a Chinese jail for illegally obtaining and selling the private information of Chinese citizens.

Chairman of the Chinese printing company said the allegation of forced labor by his company was not based on facts at all.

"I was very shocked when I heard the news, because we never had such a practice. I don't have the telephone number of the Qingpu Prison or its address. The story is completely fabricated and slander. We have never had business relations with Qingpu Prison."

The company factory is located near Shanghai, with more than 150 workers. About 80% of them are locals.

"The batch of the Christmas cards was made at the Yunguang facilities, from printing to packing, then they were put into containers to be exported . I can definitely say that it is all produced by Chinese people. I am very angry at such accusations against Chinese companies like this."

Li says about 60% of the company business is based on exports, and its foreign clients inspect the company regularly and randomly every year on workers' rights, environmental protection and fire safety.
