BEIJING, The discussions between Chinese President Hu Jintao and Philippine President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino was characterized by warmth though frank but cordial.
This was how Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda described the meeting after the welcome ceremonies at the Great Hall of the People at exactly 5:00 P.M. today.
"President Hu welcomed President Aquino and President Aquino expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded him and his party," Mr. Lacierda told the Philippine media delegation after the bilateral meeting.
The discussions focused on investments and how to enhance trade in the Philippines.
"He encouraged the Chinese to invest more in the Philippines and the Chinese side also mentioned their desire to invest more in the Philippines," Lacierda added. He further said he remains optimistic both parties can realize their goal of establishing a $60 B bilateral trade by 2016 characterized by trade and investments.
The year 2012-2013 has been declared by the Philippines as the "Year of Friendship" to which President Hu Jintao gladly agreed.
Mr. Lacierda said President Aquino brought up the South China Sea issue who mentioned the differences existing between the Philippines and China "and these differences should not deter both countries from moving forward."
He added President Aquino shared his views that the South China Sea issue requires a regional solution. The Chinese, according to Secretary Lacierda, continued to explain their position that "it should be resolved peacefully and they would encouraged that the region be developed or the South China Sea be developed as a Sea of Friendship and Cooperation."
It was learned the issue about the possibility of joint exploration of the South China Sea was not discussed.
However, President Aquino, according to Secretary Lacierda, emphasized on the need to resolve the issue on a multi-lateral level.
Mr. Lacierda said President Aquino brought up the North Rail issue which he said needs to be reconfigured and the Chinese agreed.
